Description:
A head and shoulder portrait of a young woman in a carte de visite format produced by the Dublin, Ireland photographic studio of E. and J. Lauder. The card is rimmed with a thin bright red border. This is a side view of a young woman with dark upswept hair finished in a braid at the crown of her head and with short curly bangs. Her dark dress has multiple rounded buttons and a dark lace trimmed bodice with an upright white lace ruffle ornately offset by gathered dark lace at the neckline.
Notes:
There are no clues to link this young woman's portrait to London, Ontario where her photograph resides. Edmund Stanley Lauder started his Dublin, Ireland photographic studio about 1853 producing daguerrotypes and was joined by his son James Stack Lauder in the 1860's. James, who studied painting in Paris and also worked in a photographic studio in Berlin would go on to open his own business called the Layfette Studio in 1880 and later gain fame as a photographer to royalty and other affluent clients. The Victorian printer Marion (noted in small print on reverse of the cdv) produced card stock for photography studios and the design on the reverse of this card may have been used in the 1870's according to the Roger Vaughan Picture Library website. This information has contributed to dating this photograph. The map location shown is 22 Westmoreland Street in Dublin, Ireland.
