Edmund R.T. Telford served the Royal Navy onboard HMS Achilles at the Battle of the River Plate as Chief Yeoman of Signals. At the time war was declared with Germany, the Navy in New Zealand was a division of the Royal Navy. By October, 1941 the New Zealand Division officially became the Royal New Zealand Navy (RNZN). This was in recognition of the fact that the naval force had become self-sufficient and independent during action in WW2. Ships thereafter were prefixed HMNZS.


Eddie married Pamela in 1948 and had four children; John, Terry, Phillipa, Deborah; and nine grandchildren and great grandchildren. After service in the Royal New Zealand Navy Eddie worked as a Customs Officer in the North Shore region of Auckland, New Zealand.

Eddie died peacefully at home on May 18, 2010 at the age of eighty seven.

Two hundred and fifty people attended his funeral at the Naval Base in Auckland, New Zealand.
