Leonard Porte was born in London, England on April 18, 1928. He worked as a cinema projectionist before joining the Royal Navy in May of 1946. He served on HMS Royal Arthur, HMS Raleigh, HMS Gosling and HMS Pembroke before joining HMS Ajax. Len was aboard the Ajax from July 1947 to March 1948 when he left the Navy.

After his service in the Royal Navy Len worked as a professional photographer. He owned his own studio and performed 25 weddings a week. He also acted as a professional consultant to a large photographic company in London. In 2012 he retired after 60 years in the industry.

Len was a Freeman of the City of London, heavily involved with the Scout Movement, Rotary, Freemasonry and several Charitable Organizations.

Len died on February 7, 2017 at the age of 88.
