1980s Canada’s Coming-of-Age

“O Canada” was declared the official national anthem in 1980. In 1982, Dominion Day was renamed Canada Day and the new Canadian Constitution was signed by the Queen. In 1983, Jeanne Sauve became the first woman Governor General and in 1984, Marc Garneau became the first Canadian astronaut in space. The majority of households now had two working adults and busy schedules with the children and their activities after school.

Historical Highlights

-VHS tapes began replacing 16mm film and the library stopped the loan of projectors by the end of the decade.
-Staff undertook a major project to automate the circulation procedure in 1987. It took a year to convert existing records to machine-readable form. The automation project made the card catalogue obsolete.
-The automated system supported better tracking of materials and maintained patron records and overdue fines
-Geoff Nie became the new Chief Librarian when Joanne Tate retired in 1989
