Eric was the former Chairman and founder of the HMS Ajax and River Plate Veterans Association. He visited the Town of Ajax with his friend and shipmate, Jim Brightly during the dedication and tree planting of Brightly Drive. It was then that Mayor Bill McLean disclosed that Eric would also have a steet dedicated to him, Smith Lane. Unfortunately, Eric was unable to see his street. He had planned to visit in 1999 for the 60th Anniversary celebration, but died unexpectedly that August.

His sons, Ken and Ray were able to attend the 60th Anniversary in Ajax to honour their father and officially dedicate Smith Lane to his memory.
