Leonard Carter-Bennett was born in East London on June 24, 1923. He joined the Royal Navy in June, 1942 at 19 years of age and immediately served HMS Ajax.
While on the Ajax Leonard was very involved in the ship’s football team and he was known for being very sporty. The football team competed against different countries when they had a break from the action.
Leonard spent his entire career on the Ajax, finally leaving in 1945 soon after the war. After his career with the Royal Navy ended he became a printing apprentice and worked for national newspapers like the Daily Express and News of the World.
Leonard visited Ajax in 1999 for the 60th Reunion, and for the 2005 dedication. He died December 19, 2006 in Eastbourne, England. Leonard was married to Barbara and they had a son, Matthew.
