Ajax Veterans Street Dedication: Burrells Road

Street Name: Burrells Road Name of Veteran: Albert Frederick Owen Burrells 1919-Dec. 13, 1939 Rank: Royal Marine Ship Served: HMS Ajax Date of Service on Ship: 1939 Year of Visit/Dedication: September 2001 Veteran or Family Visit: Brother Ken Burrells and sister Pat Fletcher Veteran of the Battle of the River Plate: Yes Died at Battle: Yes Albert was the son of Warrant Officer Albert Edward Burrells, Royal Air Force, and Jane Lenard Burrells, of Bedford. He was the eldest of five children and served with the Kings Squad Royal Marines. Only three members of the Kings Squad survived World War Two. Albert died at the age of 20 during the Battle of the River Plate and was buried at sea ten miles off the coast of Montevideo. There is a memorial to him at Chatham Naval Memorial.
