A colour photograph of a framed “Freedom of the Seas” document that was given to Robert Knapton of H.M.S. Ajax, 1935 in 1938.
“This is to certify that the undermentioned person has this day entered our Domain on board His Britannic Majesty’s Cruiser Ajax, and has received the ancient requisite initiation and form necessary to become one of our loyal Subjects. We declare that all whom he may meet shall treat him with proper respect and it is Our Royal Pleasure to confer upon him the Freedom of the Seas and exempt him from further homage and should he fall overboard all sharks, dolphins, whales and other dwellers of the deep are to abstain from maltreating his person. Given under our hand at our court on board The Britannic Majesty’s Ship Ajax this 17th day of August 1938 on the Equator and in Longitude 47’14w.”
