Objective of the drive is $35,000 io build and equip the West Vancouver Memorial Library, which was chosen by the electors in December, 1947, as West Vancouver^ permanent remembrance of its war dead. The illuminated Book of Remembrance, which will record the names of every one of the community’s fallen heroes from every branch of the services, is being prepared by Miss Marion Grigsby, and will be enshrined in a specially designed memorial wing of the building. It is also planned to landscape a memorial garden and lawn for a place of quiet meditation at the rear of the shrine. Already raised towards the objective of $35,000 is the sum of $4000. In addition, the library site in the 1900 block Marine Drive was dedicated several months ago by municipal council. The building cost is estimated at $28,000 with an additional $7000 required for equipment. Operation of the library will be in conjunction with the Vancouver Public Library, whose board of management has offered to exchange books and provide binding and other services at cost. After the library is permanently established its operation will be maintained by the municipal council, and no further appeals will be made to the general public for any part of the library work. Heading the campaign is Lieut.-: Col. George Smart. 4While West Vancouver is regarded as one of the most progressive municipalities in Canada today, it is one of the very few communities with no public library facilities whatever,” Col. Smart declared. “It is unfortunate that we have waited so long to correct this blind spot in our cultural develop- i ment.” An organizational meeting to brief all canvassers and to prepare final details of the campaign was held at the Community Centre Monday night.
