The 1842 Canadian census shows a John Smith residing in Bastard Twp, possibly having lived in Canada for 17 years, which would mean that John and Susan could have emigrated to Canada from Ireland in 1825, just after Philip was born. They had at least two children: Philip, born in Ireland in 1825, and a daughter, Margaret, born March 15, 1840 in Forfar, Bastard Twp, Leeds County, Ontario.
