Local artist wins another award BLIND RIVER - For the second time in two months, Blind River artist, Al Wright, has won awards for his watercolor paintings. Wright won two awards in the juried North of 17 show held in June in Elliot Lake. Wright has now won first prize in the watercolor category at the prestigious Sault Summer Artist in Sault, Mich., on the weekend. This contest, sponsored by Alberta House Art Gallery is designed to recognize outstanding talented artists in their fields of discipline. Wright's paintings contain strong color, depth, texture, and value contrasts. But there's more than these formal qualities; a painting, must also have soul. It must communicate a moods or feeling and reach out with a sense of assurance to invite the viewer to journey somewhere beyond the moment. Wright's painting, "Nostalgia: When we were young" does just that. It received the red ribbon for best watercolor The winning painting depicts two small chil- dren and a grandfather plowing a field with the use of horses. The competition in Michigan featured over 40 artists from as far away as Wisconsin and Flint, Mich. Wright has won numerous awards for his watercolors since he began painting with watercolor three years ago. His original paintings are for sale at his home in Blind River.
