Clench came to Cobourg in the mid 1820's and established a cabinet making business, which soon became highly successful. He was noted for fine craftsmanship and good design. Clench was also active in town affairs. One of his daughters, Harriet, married Paul Kane - while another, Eliza, became the wife of J. D. Armour.
