The lot name appears to be for the Saint Catharines Gass Company. The two ss's might be 'Glass' company, but it could also be the 'Gas' company, as in a firm generating gas to be used in Gas street lighting fixtures. The 'St. Catharines and Welland Canal Gas Light Company' apparently dates from 1853. Most Gas Light companies used a gas produced from coal, so a lot on the banks of the canal for coal brought in from the American ports on Lake Erie would make a lot of sense.
