A sail loft would have been for storing sails - not boats -
Dr.Theophilus Mack was an outstanding surgeon and gynecologist in his time. He was keenly interested in the curative powers of mineral water. He founded the Springbank Hotel & Spa in 1864 which made use of the mineral rich waters in the area for the treatment of just about every malady known to man at the time. The well would have been just below the location of the hotel and most likely supplied the hotel with its mineral water. Springbank later became Bishop Ridley College after the mineral water resort interest dwindled. Dr. Mack also founded the St. Catharines Training School and Nurses' Home in 1874 teaching the Nightingale system of nursing (later the school was renamed the Mack school of nursing)
